The Advanced Cardiac Institute situated behind Medical College Hospital Raipur performed the first Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure.

The procedure costs about 25 lakhs in private hospitals; the Chhattisgarh Government has provided total procedure free of cost to the poor patient under Dr. Khoobchand Baghel Swastyha Sahayata Yojana.

The 70 year old patient from a small village near Raigarh was suffering from breathlessness. On investigation he was found to have aortic bicuspid valve, but his heart had become severely dysfunctional by then because of severe aortic valve stenosis.

Cardiac surgeons refused to operate in such a diseased heart. The patient was evaluated to undergo Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacement. The patient without anaesthesia and without any incision on the chest, trans-cutaneous aortic valve was put through the thigh artery.

There are only 30 centres in India doing Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacement. Advanced Cardiac Institute Medical College, Raipur joined the list with its successful first TAVR on 9th January 2021.

The Dean of the Medical College Raipur – Dr. Pro. Vishnu Dutt and Superintendent of Hospital Dr. Vinit Jain were instrumental in the supply of the requisites for the procedure. The procedure was carried under leadership of Head of Cardiology Department – Dr. Smit Shrivastava with Dr Jogesh Daswani, Dr. Sulabh, Dr. Sandeep Nag, Dr. Shivangi Sengupta, Dr. Shriya Ambhaikar, Dr. Simran Rana.

The surgical and anaesthesia back up was taken care by Dr. K. K. Sahu, Dr. N. S. Chandel and Dr. Arunabh mukherjee. The cardiac technical team had I. P. Verma and Sister Sheena looking after the patient during and after the procedure.

The success of this advanced procedure has paved the way for many more complicated and advanced procedures to be done in future at Advanced Cardiac Institute. The open heart surgeries are also going to be started soon at the institute.

The Advanced Cardiac Institute leads the cardiac services in the state with a varied variety of advanced cardiac procedures that have been done here. The institute has successfully operated from a 10 Days child to a 104 years old patient.

The institute excels in paediatric cardiac interventions, percutaneous valve procedures, pacemaker device implantations and coronary interventions. Recently, the institute has started treatment of abnormal heart beats 3D electrophysiology and radio-frequency ablation.

Trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has proven to be the cornerstone therapy for patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). India is currently overburdened with AS, both rheumatic and non-rheumatic. Although TAVR has revolutionized the treatment of non-rheumatic AS it does offer a ray of hope for rheumatic AS in future.
